President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. signed into law Republic Act (RA) No. 12024, otherwise known as the Self-Reliant Defense Posture (SRDP) Revitalization Act, in a ceremonial signing held at the Ceremonial Hall, Malacañan Palace, Manila, 08 October 2024.

RA 12024 aims to develop the country’s defense industry by creating ways to boost the local production of defense equipment and is seen to complement the recently-adopted the Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept to enhance maritime security and the defensive posture of the country.

The said law is among the priority measures of the Marcos Jr. administration. RA 12023 provides that the Department of National Defense (DND) is tasked to formulate and implement the Self-Reliant Defense Posture Program to revitalize the defense industry and address the short-, medium-, and long-term needs for defense equipment in the country. It also seeks to give preference to Filipino-owned enterprises when it comes to the development, servicing, and operation of materiel in the country.

In his message, President Marcos Jr. emphasized that the new law will enable the Philippines to develop technologies to counter unconventional threats in the current defense and security landscape.

Presidential Legislative Liaison Office (PLLO) Secretary Mark Llandro L. Mendoza, together with other PLLO officials and staff, attended the said ceremonial signing.
